World Forum 2010 - Cambridge UK

The International Biographical Center, UK and the American Biographical Institute once again organised the annual World Forum, this time held in the beautiful setting of St. John's College at Cambridge University, UK.

This year a gave a presentation on 'Changing Education: a challenge across the world for the 21st century.' After speaking about past changes in education I showed photos of schools in the different countries I have visited: South Africa, Malta, India, Algeria, Qatar and Dubai where change is taking place and pointed towards some of the challenges teachers face now and in the future.

I was greatly honoured with an unexpected award for 'Distinguished Intellectual Contributions to the 2010 World Forum, Cambridge, England Representing Europe', for which I thank humbly the two respective Institutes.

Beijing, China - May 2010

The Multiple Intelligences Institute in Beijing organised a World Symposium at which Professor Howard Gardner was a speaker. It was advertised as an all Asia Symposium, so I decided to attend as I work so much in India and wanted to hear about Gardner's latest research.

I was not disappointed. It was a wonderful conference, with many excellent speakers and very informative group sessions.

After the two-day conference, I stayed on for three days to do some site-seeing, visiting the Temple of Heaven and Hutong, The Forbidden City and Summer Palace, the Ming Tombs and a walk along the Great Wall of China. Wonderful experiences and my guide was first class.

Dubai - January 2010

How lucky I was to be invited back yet again to take part in four school inspections, leading three of them. I visited schools in the city of Dubai and also 40 minutes away, travelling to a village in the desert.

When I arrived in Dubai on January 1st, all were still in festive mood with families from many Arab countries enjoying a holiday at the hotel.

A truly momentous occasion was the opening of Burj Khalifa (Dubai) the highest building in the world at 828 metres. The six-lane traffic came to a halt, as we all watched the amazing fireworks and the ceremonial opening.

ABI and IBC World Forum 2009, in Washington USA

Another wonderful World Forum organised by the American Biographical Institute and the International Biographical Centre,UK. This time it was held in Washington DC, at the end of June and the start of July, so we were there for the festivities on the 4th July.

As always the presentations were of high quality and by people from many different professions and countries. A real cultural exchange of ideas and many international professional friendships formed.

It was a sadness to us all that I had to give news to the gathering of the death of two former delegates, Dr. and Mrs. Sandu of Spring Dale and Spring Blossom schools, Amritsar.

Visit 6
Travelling by overnight train, planes and taxis, I covered very many miles.

My first school was:
The Aditya Birla Public School - Renusaga (a very different setting from other schools I have visited, as the school provides for the community that serves the coal mine and electricity plant in this quite remote area. A five and a half hour taxi drive from the airport at Varanasi began this visit.)

From here I went on to run a two-day workshop in Bal Bharti School - New Delhi.

Then to Chandigarh to carry out Parent Consultations and enjoy a family Multi-Faith festival weekend with friends. A wonderful drive up the Morni Hills near Chandgarh to Tikar Tall Lake, celebrations in the Nadha Sahid Gurdwara and Christ Church - The Church of North India, and a dinner party with friends are among many happy memories.

Back to SunCity World School in Gurgaon to run a one day workshop - I had visited the school before, and was interested to hear about the progress they are making in multiple intelligences planning.

From there to Delhi Public School in Jalandhar for a two day workshop. On the way back from here I was honoured to visit a family involved with renovation historical buildings in the village of Ladhran. This is such a worthwhile project as historical buildings cannot be saved once lost. They need all the help that can be offered them.

Daly College - Indore kindly invited be back for a second time, to observe lessons and provide written feedback, and were kind enough to arrange for me to stay four nights at their guest house in wonderful surroundings.

Then to Bangalore to contribute to the TAIAI Conference for Teachers and Middle Management. I was indeed honoured to be invited to take part.

And lastly a third visit to Springdale - Amritsar - for four days, to carry out classroom observations and general education consultancy.

Back to Chandigarh to meet a fellow International Education Consultant and compare notes on what we each offer in our workshops, and then time for one more unexpected pleasure - a weekend at Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, somewhere I have wanted to visit since I first came to India. Another pestigious school in a wonderful setting, up in this Himalyan hill station. Thank you so much for having me to stay as your guest.

Another truly amazing visit, with so many friends and colleagues now across the country. Thank you all for your continued kindness and hospitality.

Ferhat Abbes University, Setif. Algeria

A wonderful week in Algeria! I was kindly invited by the linguistics department to contribute, in February, to the students' teacher training programme. The students will be leaving university this year and most will apply for teaching posts. The first language of people in Algeria is Arabic but most people also speak French fluently. French is taught as the main, second language and English as a third language.

Three hundred 4th Year university students joined me each morning for a lecture in the auditorium, and this was followed by workshops in smaller groups of about 30 students with a teacher/lecturer in classrooms. There was much enjoyment when practical activities were the plan for the day!

The students were enormously generous, enthusiastic, warm, friendly and very keen to learn. A wonderful group of people.

I was also extremely well looked after by two colleagues, who joined me for meals and from whom I learned much about Algerian culture. They also organised and took me on many site-seeing visits. We walked through Setif shopping area and market, visited the countryside where I saw the very 'French' villages, and travelled further afield, with appropriate security, to Djemila to see the extensive, well preserved ruins of a Roman city. Absolutely amazing!

Yes, what a wonderful week! Thank you so much everyone.

Visit 5 - Just before Christmas I returned for a brief visit. I observed teaching at Sanskriti on one day and fed back to teachers on the second day. The quality of teaching was excellent. I also ran workshops in Nirmal Bhartia School in Delhi. In Chandigarh I was invited to conduct parent consultations, which I trust proved useful to those concerned.

A short visit this time, because I wanted to be home for Christmas, but again a very rewarding one. Thank you for inviting me to your schools and sharing your concerns with me in the consultations.

Visit 4 - In October I visited Springdale School - Amritsar - for the second time. Here I observed lessons on the first day and ran a workshop on the second day.

Assessment of Teaching Assistants

When not overseas, I continue to visit schools in the UK assessing teaching assistants to ensure that they meet the standards required to take on the position of Higher Level Teaching Assistants and the responsibilties, which include teaching responsibilties, that come with this status.

The standard is high and many of these people are already making a very worthwhile contribution to their schools. Some wish to go on to become fully qualified teachers themselves.

Introductory Workshops on Multiple Intelligences

I have now visited India three times in the last six months to run workshops, introducing teachers to the concept of multiple intelligences and showing them how they can plan for their pupils' different intelligences in their classrooms.

The December visit took us to:

MAW Education is working in partnership with The Achievers' Programme in India http://www.theachieversprogramme.com running workshops for teachers on Multiple Intelligences, which focus on the application of MI in the classroom. In September we were kindly hosted by five schools:

This new edition - "Multiple Intelligences - New Horizons" - covers all developments since its original publication in 1993, and stands out as the most thorough and up-to-date account of the theory and application of Multiple Intelligences available anywhere.

Reminder - The DMI Book of the Month is "Teaching and Learning through Multiple Intelligences" - Third Edition - by Linda Campbell, Bruce Campbell and Dee Dickinson. It is a 'must' for classteachers.

People purchase from and come back to this site because we provide a personal service.

When you write and tell us about your work we search for more books, videos, assessment information or new technology, such as web-conferencing software, that could help you with your work. We then let you know when they are available to be ordered or used. What is needed we try to provide. For example, the initial newsletter was recently translated into Arabic so that all teachers on the training course in Qatar, whether Arabic speaking or bilingual, could read more about the theory of multiple intelligences and apply it to their teaching and to their students' learning.

Other people have told us that in their country it is difficult to find these or other good books at all. We listen to your concern and try to find a way round your problem.

Brain functions, Multiple Intelligences, Mind and Memory

The website www.discover-multiple-intelligences.com was originally set up in response to the large number of people who where searching the Internet for information on Multiple Intelligences. It was not a subject I had researching into myself, but it is linked to my own teacher training and aims as a teacher to bring out the individual talent of each pupil. I was Froebel trained and through this training learned, early on in my training, to observe how individual pupils learn. I only wish that teachers' training now-a-days gave students those same opportunities. Almost every course we did, at sometime involved working with a group of children and observing how they learned. It is with this background that I find the theory of Multiple Intelligences so interesting.

I began by finding ten books and two videos that would assist those who were searching the web for information. This, I thought, would be a start for anyone new to the subject and might fill gaps in the knowledge of those already familiar with MI theory. As a result, teachers, professors and researchers have contacted me from many different countries.

This week I have added books and videos to the site on the related themes of the Brain, Mind and Memory. I hope these too will be of interest to you and add to your knowledge .

Multiple Intelligence, Reading and Writing, Time Management, Brochures, Presentations.

The www.discover-multiple-intelligences.com website has been updated recently and additional ebooks have been added. They are by three different authors.

I wrote the first ebook after reading some of the books you have bought. In chapter 3, I comment, from my own teaching and inspecting experience, on Thomas Armstrong's book 'The Multiple Intelligences of Reading and Writing'. His book is well worth having. I wonder if you have had similar experiences to the ones I describe.

The second author, Robert Boudch, has written many ebooks. I have chosen two for you. The first would be useful to professionals who work to tight schedules and have heavy work loads. It gives very structured advice on how to make the best use of your time. His second ebook gives equally well-structured advice on how to make more use of a brochure to advertise your services or goods. If you are self employed or run a small business, this would be well worth looking at. Both ebooks are written in a very easy style to read and remember.

The third author, Graham Jones, writes many ebooks and reports on a range of psychological issues, such as child psychology, parenting and the application of child psychology to business. The link on my webpage will take you to his website. However, the three ebooks I have listed for you would be helpful to any teacher, headteacher of lecturer about to give a presentation. If you are about to go for an interview or run an inservice training course, you are likely to find these ebooks very useful indeed.

Education Consultancy - Teaching Assistants

www.maweducation.co.uk provides information about different education consultancy that I offer, with some background information, so that you know on what experience it is based.

My most recent work has been working for four months (February to June this year) in Qatar, a rapidly developing Gulf state in the Middle East, where I joined a team of three other trainers who were training teachers for the new government Independent Schools that are being opened there. It was a wonderful experience and I am grateful to all with whom I worked.

Next year I expect to be involved in the UK, amongst other work, with the initiative to train classroom assistants to become Higher Level Teaching Assistants.

Self employed and setting up a website

MAW Education began in 1994 when I started to inspect schools. I had previously been a teacher and then headteacher, employed by others. As an OFSTED Inspector I had to become self-employed, and as such have a business. This was new to me, so the obvious name to give the business was my own initials, which I thought might also be useful for advertising purposes such as MAW Education - 'Is what you are looking for MAW (more) Education?' - or some such phrase!

During the ten years I was inspecting schools I had no need, and no time, to develop the business, but I did set up the first website www.maweducation.co.uk with advice from my bank and after attending a Bootcamp, run by the IMC, to learn how to set one up and develop it. They - the Internet Marketing Centre, based in Canada and the USA - have given me invaluable help and support ever since.
